It's done. After over a year and a half of work, it's finally finished. Mixed and mastered. I'm going to be listening over the holiday weekend and making sure there aren't any bugs needing ironing out (how's that for a mixed metaphor) but aside from that it's done, and it sounds great.

All else there is left to do now is cross our fingers and wait until Tuesday.

Almost time / Poster set

One week to go until the single is out. I haven't worked on it in a while because I wanted to give my ears time away from the mix before I finalized everything. I listened to my "release candidate" export today and I'm feeling hesitant about it; maybe it's my mood, who knows. Even if it doesn't wind up totally right, there's still another two weeks after that for the album itself to come out right. So I have high hopes for things.

In other news, in case anyone is interested, here is the complete poster set for all four albums. I don't think these are available anywhere else (since stashbox closed and myspace probably deleted the Primitive Circuitry poster), and I don't think I have hi-res versions of any of them, sadly (besides the new one). If anyone is interested I can see if I can wrangle up some bigger ones.

Update: Alright, here are hi-res poster versions. That's about as good as you're going to get. Fortunately I'd saved the raw documents for all of them except Cleanse, which I just re-did from scratch.

Alright, finally recording is all done (unless I find bits I need to re-do). I am going to have to spend a bit of time reinstalling some software since I did a clean reinstall of Windows, so it'll be a few days before I have my workstation up and running again to start editing the vocals, putting in effects and interludes, and starting mixing. But stuff is definitely coming along.

My Internet access is back, so I can post here consistently now! This past week I have had tons of free time so I went ahead and recorded all the guitar parts for the new album. The new guitar and distortion pedal sounded fantastic, so thanks to everyone who has donated at my Bandcamp page, you've helped make the new stuff sound good! More or less it's a continuation of the sound of the last album, maybe a bit more death metal and post-hardcore influence, which is pretty interesting.

Hopefully I will make some decent progress on vocals this week, but we will see; I think I want to get some more rehearsing in first. One of the more common complaints about Primitive Circuitry was the vocals, so that's something I'm going to try to focus on a bit more heavily. (Gotta give the people what they want!)

Still gonna say November for a tentative release. Haven't made any decisions on titles or art or anything like that yet.

So this time I have a good excuse for not updating this blog: I just moved and haven't had consistent Internet access for a week, nor will I for another week. However, not having Internet means that I am forced to be more productive. And I have been! In the last couple of days I recorded all the major bass guitar parts. I might have to re-record some bits or later but for now that's all completely done. I will do guitar and vocals probably all in the coming week (I finally got new strings too so I should be all set).

So if I get recording done this coming week, let's say I'll probably have all the sounds laid down at the end of the month, spend October mixing, and maybe it will be out in November.

We'll see, as usual.

Finished tracking drums, finally. That's always the longest and most excruciating part. They're not even really done for real; I still have a bunch of tweaking to do since all I wanted was to get the groundwork down so I could record other stuff over them. Hopefully I'll be able to get new guitar strings this weekend (also, finally) and actually maybe start recording for real. It's definitely not gonna happen by the end of the month like I speculated. It might not start before the end of the month. Moving is gonna screw my schedule up. Album's looking to be maybe 43 minutes long or so. I hope you enjoy this silly fact.

New gear!

I had been thinking about getting a new guitar to record the new album. I've had my current one, the Ibanex EX 370 (I talked about it a bit here) for I think about six or seven years now and while it's held up all that time it's really not that great of a guitar; it has obnoxious features and it's a bit beat up and doesn't sound all that great. So I was going to look around at some stores, see what struck my fancy; I wound up getting a new one on the first day I went looking (Saturday, at Woodsy's in Kent, Ohio): a Schecter Omen-6:

It's not an expensive guitar, but it's new and very well-built (Schecter is a great brand, from what I've played before) and it sounds awesome with my Metal Muff. (I'm pretty sure the Schecter Diamond series are designed specifically for playing metal anyway.) The only thing is it needs new strings and they closed the only good music store in Columbus that I know of.

Today I finished the first draft of the lyrics (finally), something I've been putting off WAY too long, and also made a complete vocal demo. Apart from being really sloppy, the new demo sounds pretty good and I'm pleased with progress so far. Things are finally starting to move a bit faster. I'll hopefully have all the drums tracked by the end of next week, if I'm lucky, and I'll probably round out the month with more rehearsal and maybe recording bass.

Just finished a full bass rehearsal of my new, re-arranged demos; it's sounding really good. I'm enjoying the heavier and more punk-influence direction things are taking. Also, I seem to have forgotten how much better playing fingerstyle sounds with the bass and I'm pretty sure I'm going to ditch the pick entirely for this album; I don't think it really has a place in the new stuff. I've already started tracking the drums for the finished product (one song done, out of seven) and hope to record guitar and bass during the next month. Vocals will have to wait for a bit since I've still barely written any lyrics. It's a tough job. In the meantime, more rehearsing. I think the vocals are going to sound better this time around. There were some complaints about the last album but I've practiced quite a bit since then.

Hopefully I'll be updating more next month when I get down to business with recording. We'll see, as always.

Hooray, finally time to work on music! I'm been tweaking song arrangements and writing lyrics for the new album the past week or so. I don't want to say too much about a release date yet, but my tentative schedule is to finish arrangements and lyrics this month, record in August, mix in September, and maybe release late September or October. Perhaps.

I've also been working on a new project; this time a collaboration with a friend of mine. I'll talk about that later when it starts shaping up more.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is currently hosting a number of works by Thomas Cole, which I had the pleasure of seeing yesterday while I was in the District. They didn't have Romantic Landscape with Ruined Tower, unfortunately (that's at the Albany Institute of History and Art), but they did have one that looked quite a bit like it—Italian Coast Scene with Ruined Tower. I'm not a huge art admirer, but it was probably the coolest museum I've ever been to, so if you're around there definitely take a look.

Album progress update

Hello everyone! I figured I'd do a bit of posting about how the new music is coming along. I've decided that I'm done writing demos and have picked out eight of them to become fully-fledged songs on the new album. Right now I'm working on getting the preliminary order worked out, and pretty soon I'm going to start writing the tabs, editing arrangements, and writing lyrics.

The songs themselves have turned out great so far. They're not too terribly different in style from those on Primitive Circuitry, maybe with a little extra post-hardcore influence. Of course as always I'm trying to do something different / new / experimental with them all and we'll see how that goes. Well, I'm liking them so far and so should any fans of the last album.

It's been a slow process so far, but as I've said before I've had a lot on my plate lately, which is going to change drastically in the next few weeks, and I think I'll have a lot more time to do work on music this summer. I'm going to try to get it out before the calendar year is up, which should be doable, but I'm not going to speculate on that any further at this point.

Ectype: Official Announcement!

I've finally decided to finish Ectype. It has actually been almost-done for a while now; it was mostly a combination of working on other things and forgetting it existed. But now it's officially coming!

Bandcamp's conditions disallow uploading covers (don't tell them about "Waiting Room"), so I'll just put up a Mediafire link on May 3. The tracklist will be as follows:

As you probably know, I've been working on a fourth Deterior album. It's been slow going, especially when you consider I've been writing sketches of new songs since May of last year (yep, before Primitive Circuitry was even finished), but thankfully I've got a huge amount of material to work from—64 sketches so far—so going to the next step, writing demos, hasn't been to challenging yet. I think I'm maybe almost halfway done doing demos. For the last album I made I think thirteen. I've got six so far; I'd like to do at least thirteen again, maybe fifteen if I can (I've definitely got enough material to do at least fifteen).

What is making things difficult is my desire to write about a million different types of music all at once. Deterior has traditionally been a post-rock/sludge sort of deal, but I always have this urge to write post-hardcore, death metal, black metal, noise rock... maybe one day; I don't have the kind of talent to pull all that off. But I am pretty pleased with how things are coming along so far, and I'm excited to get this album really rolling and out hopefully this year. Considering my previous timeframes, it should definitely be finished this year, especially since I'll have more free time after I graduate. Maybe around August or September.

So anyway, on that note, here's a song I've been enjoying lately.

Somehow I got through the entire month of January without a blog post. My life was pretty crazy what with starting the new quarter and continuing the job search. But that's partly behind me now.

I've still been working on new song sketches and I'm up to about 64, I think, so I'm going to try to finish up assessments and start putting together some demos soon. Unfortunately I'm not as pleased with any of them as I feel like I should be, but that will probably change once I get some demos done. I'm going to try to crank out about a dozen again, maybe a few more depending how long they are (I already have two done), so that'll keep me occupied for a couple months probably.

Again, I want to make zero promises on when anything at all is going to come out, because my life is going to be a huge mess come graduation and when I start my new job.

New album progress

Apparently I haven't even mentioned this yet.

I'm already working on a new album. I've been writing song sketches (essentially, guitar jams) since May and so far have about fifty—about three and a half hours' worth—to use. After the clusterfuck of finals/the holidays are over, I'm going to start piecing together some real demos starting in January; maybe I'll have a couple to post around then as well. Going by that timeframe, I'm looking at actually having something released in July or August. But considering graduation/potential moving in June, who knows what will happen, so don't hold your breath.

p.s. If you still haven't downloaded Primitive Circuitry for free yet, better get on it—it might not stay free for long as there are a limited number of free downloads left.

Ve3tro Interview

Hey, it's me again. Yeah, I'm still here. Been super busy with school, work, and looking for a job post-graduation. That's all going splendidly but unfortunately leaves little time for music. Rest assured that I'm still cranking out song ideas when I have time.

While you wait, I thought I'd post the interview I conducted with the media webzine Ve3tro (it seems they now only do video games), originally published in late January 2009, just after Cleanse came out.

Ve3tro: What is the main purpose of your music? Do you have any particular message or meaning that you try to make your work embellish?
Deterior: The main purpose of all the music I do is to entertain myself. I started writing music because it sounded fun and it was something I had always been interested in doing and was willing to learn. I spent several years churning out utter crap. It took me two years to write and record World, and even then I wasn't satisfied with what I had made (which isn't to say I'm completely satisfied with anything I've done). However, each release does have its own minor purpose. I was going through some slightly difficult personal times when I was writing World, and the lyrics were a reflection of some of those problems. I actually wrote two sets of lyrics; I felt that the first set were just too personal and wanted something a little more subtle. It told a sort of story that vaguely connected to my life. The themes were meant to be continued in Antimonument, and to me they are, but without lyrics it's hard to show that. It's much less personal. Antimonument was mostly an exercise in seeing if I was capable of focusing enough to make a full-length album. Cleanse was me seeing if I could make an album with vocals in it. The lyrical themes presented there are half abstract nonsense and half actual meaningful stuff, but they're much more positive, which is reflective of the fact that my life has improved over the last few years. However, vocals never were the focal aspect of my music; I have always considered the music to be the most important part. Everything else I've done (the other EPs) have been purely for fun and experimenting. Lifting of the Veil doesn't have any intended meaning in it whatsoever. Of course, since I like to keep my lyrics abstract, any of them could be construed to mean anything.

V: Godspeed You! Black Emperor are noted as a musical heavy influence on Deterior, but what other artists or subjects inspire you to create? (other than music)
D: I am inspired by just about everything I hear, see, and read nowadays. Of course, it's mostly other music that helps inspire me to create, and a lot moreso now, since my tastes have been expanding into a lot more experimental music. Listening to what other musicians can do in a more experimental environment often inspires me to try to mimic what I hear with my own music. Additionally, a lot of my atmospheric stuff has been inspired by films. Antimonument had several film clips in it, from 28 Days Later, 12 Monkeys, Apocalypse Now, and several World War II-era documentaries and educational films. The imagery and emotion associated with the clips I used (and various other films I've seen) emphasized the moods I wanted to create and helped inspire different ways to manipulate sound and ambience to emulate those moods. It's a bit of a different situation with the Music for... EPs. Music for Nucleonics has a heavy space theme, characterized by the title, artwork, and the bleak atmosphere created by the music. I'm not entirely sure what inspired that, but it probably has something to do with the slight interest I've had in space technology for most of my life, which has picked back up in recent years. Music for Automata (unreleased at the time of this interview) has a sort of discrete mathematics/chaos theory theme, which was definitely inspired by a book on the subject laying around my room which I picked up to get song titles from. The cover artwork is a specific pattern from Conway's Game of Life,^* a cellular automation game that I've always had this interest in. That probably has to do with the fact that I'm a computer science major. But I would say the biggest influence on my music comes from other music, no question.

V: Cassette tapes… does anyone actually purchase cassette tapes?
D: I read recently that cassette tapes are coming back "in style", presumably similar to the resurgence of the vinyl record in recent years. The cassette culture is having a revival. This baffled me at first, since cassette tapes are awkward to produce and use and also have terrible sound quality compared to records and CDs. Regardless, a lot of underground labels have been releasing noise, ambient, and industrial stuff on tape, and I think this mostly is caused by the Internet music culture. More and more people are listening exclusively to digital copies of music, and physical releases are becoming more and more of a novelty thing. I'm speaking from personal experience, too; I don't have a turntable but I own a few vinyl records, and I got them simply for the appeal of owning music in an interesting format. Packaging is the biggest reason—I'm a sucker for cool packaging, and there's so much opportunity for creativity in packaging artwork. It doesn't matter if people can play it or not, but if it looks cool, people will want a copy. Admittedly the packaging for the Music for... tapes aren't interesting, but they are definitely a "novelty" thing.

V: Will you be looking to release future work on CDs or are you going to be taking a strictly downloadable direction?
D: The idea of putting out CDs has always been something sitting at the back of my mind, but I don't have a whole lot of incentive to go through with it at this point. Clearly, releasing CDs gives an artist a lot more legitimacy, a bit of extra cash, and of course there's the opportunity for extra creativity with the packaging. One of the biggest things keeping me from making CDs right now is the financial aspect. I simply don't have the money to press a bunch of CDs myself, especially since I have practically zero experience running a label. I haven't bothered trying to get signed somewhere either, probably because I'm pretty comfortable running things the way they are at the moment. If someone were to approach me and offer to print some stuff up, I'd probably say yes, but I'm just as happy if they don't. I've offered everything I have for a free download so far, and I consider myself successful—heck, even lucky—if people listen to it.

V: What do you hope to accomplish with the next record?
D: Actually, after Cleanse, the "Tidal" single, and Music for Automata all come out within the next couple of months, I'll probably be taking a break from Deterior for a bit to focus more on my education, like I did last year. I'll definitely pick it all back up before too long, probably this summer at the latest. I don't have any clear goals in mind for what I want to do with my next record. Something that I wanted to do with Cleanse was actually releasing the album in three discs, which could be played individually or synced (somewhat of a nod to Rosetta and Boris, but theirs weren't three discs). I didn't really possess the time or skill to pull this off the way I wanted. I think this would be a really cool thing to try to work on later this year. It would really tie the rock and noise aspects of my music that have been mostly separated from each other so far, and I'd have tons of time to crank out a lot of quality material since I would want to spend a lot of time working on it, possibly until early 2010. It's anyone's guess though.

V: Something very noticeable in your work is the abundance of noise and electronics, is this something that you see taking a more prominent role in your work?
D: Over the last year or so, I've become more and more enthralled by noise music and experimental music in general. Noise is great because of its lack of restrictions. It can convey any attitude, atmosphere, or mood better than conventional music can. That being said, I still love rock music and making rock music. I'm more used to it, it's more familiar to people in general, it's what I learned to play and enjoy growing up. But more and more of the artists and bands I listen to incorporate some sort of noise or ambience into their work, which I think is great, and it's something I've wanted to emulate in my music as well. It's all about experimentation, doing something different, something I'm not entirely used to; just to add to the atmosphere and maybe freak people out. Noise can be scary sometimes, and I love it.

V: Have you thought about releasing a[nother] purely instrumental album?
D: Antimonument was an instrumental album for two reasons: One, I didn't own a microphone, and I'd had to borrow one for World; I couldn't do so later on. Two, I thought the vocals on World were just terrible. There's probably very few people more self-conscious and insecure than the amateur vocalist. Even though some people told me that the vocals weren't actually bad, I didn't believe them. So, I figured that I'd skip on the vocals for Antimonument since doing vocals for a full-length album seemed to be a big task. I did manage to sort of pull them off on Lifting of the Veil since they were pretty minimal and there was harldy any actual singing in it. At some point between then and me starting to write Cleanse, I picked up some new processing software that really improved the quality of my vocals.^** As for whether or not future releases will have vocals, it's really up to the type of music I do. The rock-oriented stuff probably will still have vocals for a while, while the noise stuff won't. I can't say for sure, though; vocals are still my least-favorite part of the recording process.

V: How do you encourage your fans to promote your work? Do you offer any incentives or plan on developing a method to expand your audience?
D: So far, I've actually done very little promotion work on my own, but the Internet has been a great promotion tool. When I release any of my music, the first place it goes is straight to Last.fm, which is already a huge site with tons of users. I recommended Antimonument to a few groups there when it came out; within a few months, users there had spread it all over the Internet to various blogs and websites. I thought that was extremely cool that that had happened. Unfortunately, Last.fm redesigned their site and haven't brought back group recommendations yet, but I'm not too concerned; there are plenty of other sites I can use, the main other one being Jamendo, which is mostly focused on promoting underground and unsigned artists. I've been looking around for similar sites lately. Of course, I still promote and post everything I need to on my blog and MySpace, which is probably more than enough exposure anyway. The day that Cleanse came out, it got dozens upons dozens of downloads during that one day, and I don't really know how that happened. So apparently I'm doing something right.

Yeah, been a long time posting. I've been busy with work somewhat, but that hasn't kept me from working on music. I've got a bunch of sketches of new songs that I've been working on for the past few months, and Ectype is being worked on a bit, too.

In the meantime, I found all the guitar tablature I made when recording Primitive Circuitry sitting around and thought someone might find it fun to look at. I used drop A tuning, which is kind of unusual, but some pitch-shifting plugins can get the music up to a playable pitch.

It figures that right after I make a post claiming that I'm not slacking off on the new album that I have one of my least-productive weeks. Well there is only bass for one track left to go (plus some extra tweaks/bits I forgot) and vocals for one of the B-sides for the single—which, by the way, is the third track "A Grey Cell" and will be out (like I said) May 18... assuming, of course, both the B-sides are in order by then.

Mixing is about half done too, and I'm pumped for this. It's sounding good, I think.

Seriously though I drank at least a gallon of water in the space of a few hours total this week in order to keep my throat lubed up enough to crank out all the vocals for the new album. But oh it was worth it. (It better be, anyway.)

Break is over starting next week and I'll be cranking out the bass then, the final step for recording. Then about a million months of mixing and tweaking. Hooray.

Recording series, part 2

Bleh, my throat hurts. Probably shouldn't have done that vocal demoing all at once. Yep, there's (so far) going to be quite a bit of harsh vocals on it; hopefully my throat will man up enough to take it when I do the official recording in about two weeks. (That's one last week of class, followed by finals, followed by one week of free time for me to crank them out.)

In fact I didn't even have the lyrics finalized until today, and even then I actually wrote a line or two today to get it all fitting together. I suppose it's going to be around the same amount that was on Cleanse; present but sort of in the background part of the time and still letting the instruments have their way with the music.

I don't remember if Cleanse was supposed to be a concept album (Antimonument was for sure), but the new one isn't so much. The lyrics are still pretty abstract but I wrote them all without any connection between songs. Mostly they are about everyday life.

I am going to try to put together the guitar recording session video soonish, by the way.

One of them will be a remix (of a previously-released song) done by Rubb., whom you may recall from the Spire remix single. The other one will be a cover of the band Fugazi.

Recording series, part 1

I was planning to post some pictures or video or something, but that's not working out yet... I'll try to do so in the future.

Right, so, I've officially begun the recording process for the new album. At this point, I have recorded all the guitar for the first of seven songs, and I'm probably just going to progress straight through and then do bass and vocals after. Seems simpler that way.

So about my equpiment: I've been using the same guitar for a long time now, an Ibanex EX 370 that I got used in 2005 or so. I don't like it very much. The main problem with it is the fact that it has a floating (Floyd Rose) bridge, meaning that where the strings attach at the bottom just kind of goes up and down whenever it wants instead of staying put. Apparently there are professionals who can string guitars with floating bridges. I can't. When I restrung my guitar for Antimonument, I tried to use regular drop D tuning, resulting in so much tension that I just broke the top two strings. I'd already recorded bass guitar in D, so I was more or less forced to record the guitar using only the lower four strings. The only real solution was to downtune, which is why Lifting of the Veil is downtuned to drop B flat (as is Cleanse). This actually worked out quite nicely since B flat was more in my vocal range anyway and I got a decently heavy sound with the detuned strings. However, B flat isn't a good tuning for bass guitar. I own a five-string Ibanez Soundgear (also kind of a crappy model) and wasn't sure how to tune it. For Lifting of the Veil I just detuned all the strings down so they were incredibly floppy and sounded awful; for Cleanse I only detuned the bottom string so it was six half-steps off the rest of the strings which was really difficult to play with and I'm really not sure what I was thinking. So, for the new album, I've decided to go a bit further with drop A tuning; with this, not only can I get away with only detuning one bass string, but I've also been able to borrow a fretless bass for some parts without detuning it (people hate it when you detune their guitars). So that will hopefully wind up sounding pretty cool.

Since I record in my apartment bedroom and can't really have any amps, I do direct injection from the guitar/bass into a Digitech BP80 pedal straight into my desktop computer. I love the pedal; I've had it almost as long as my bass (about 6 years) and it's excellent for practice; however when recording I only use it for distortion since I add most other effects (reverb, delay, etc.) during mixing.

That's pretty much all there is to say about my equipment... hopefully next update I'll have more to say about the actual recording process.

I think I'm just about finished editing the arrangements for all seven of the songs on the new album. I'm probably going to crank out tabs for them and then I should be able to start the recording process within a couple weeks. Very exciting stuff.

So yeah, like I said before, even though I loved Cleanse when it came out last year, I've realized that I made a lot of mistakes in its execution and it doesn't reflect my best effort. I'm trying to put a lot more effort into the new album, which I hope will show. Like I said I realized that the overlong ambient pieces really took away from the flow so there is going to be a lot less of that.

The tentative title right now is Primitive Circuitry, in case anyone was wondering. Barring any horrible accidents, I hope to have it ready to go in maybe mid-spring.

It's sounding much different from Cleanse (perhaps that's a good thing); it's faster and has kind of a more "post-hardcore" sound to it. Or something like that. Maybe I've been listening to too much punk lately... nah.

I suppose I should apologize for the severe lack of updates lately... one a month really isn't as much as I should be writing, I feel. the reason for that is probably because there's been a lot of stuff going on with me lately, mostly classwork, but rest assured that I am working on a ton of music-related stuff; it just won't come to fruition for a while, I suppose. here's a quick rundown:

I have not worked on Ectype in a long time, but it is actually nearing completion; it just needs bass recorded and mixing/mastering.
vocals and half of the guitar for the re-recorded edition of World are finished. I'm working on developing a more polished guitar tone via effects added during mixing instead of during recording, which should shape up to be interesting. I probably already mentioned that I have a new, more professional-sounding drum machine; it's pretty cool.
I still haven't been able to press Music for Battery though I'll probably be able to over Thanksgiving weekend, once I get access to the tape recorder I've been using. once that does finally come out, I'm going to offer a discount price for the tape trilogy (although it will still be available on CD-R).
songwriting for the new album is also cranking along. I'm going to try to give myself more time for writing this time instead of practically improvising songs as I record them (something both Antimonument and Cleanse could have done without). it's probably going to be shorter too; I've realized that the ambient segueing wasn't good for overall flow and interest.

yep, I'm finally cranking out stuff for the re-recorded version of the debut EP World. it can't be finished until at least after I am rejoined with my bass in late September, but I've got vocals done and I'll have guitar and drums finished by then as well. I've recently acquired a brand-spankin-new drum machine and it sounds godly. you'll be able to hear it on World and everything coming out after it; Ectype is stuck with the old drum machine I used for Cleanse, which is still good in its own way though.

okay so apparently I have failed to say anything detailed about the covers EP Ectype that's in the works. right now it's looking like it's going to be four songs, covering Depeche Mode, Why?, Liars, and Venetian Snares. currently everything but the bass is recorded and I'm mixing stuff. unfortunately it's been taking a while because I've been really busy with school; fortunately that's winding down soon. hopefully it will be ready to go in June or July.

of course we also have the final noise tape, Music for Battery, has been finished for a while and is awaiting pressing. that may happen this weekend, actually. as the name implies the sounds are drum-based, and it's much harsher and more textured than Music for Automata (at least, I think so). that may be out in July or August or something like that. a re-recording of the debut EP World is sort of underway as well. the third album is in planning stages (for release no earlier than 2010), and if I'm ambitious enough there may be a new EP out before then too. we shall see...

looking farther ahead into the future, the third noise tape (which has been recorded already) and a covers EP are in the works for release sometime later this year. additionally, I'm a bit hesitant to announce that I have already begun writing songs for the third full-length album; however, it is going to be a very long time until it's ready (think maybe the end of this year or early 2010).

wow, so yeah, sorry I'm not really keeping up with this as much as I should have; I guess I've been busy with school or something? well, anyway, I now have my bass and I've been practicing some lines, but I'm not going to do any recording until my thumbs heal from their separate tragic accidents. I wrote one more song, too, and have to record that and throw it in...

still no title or cover. I'm having a lot of trouble with that, though I guess it's not a big deal until it's closer to being done.

recording of guitars is totally done, assuming I don't make any last-minute changes or additions. all the pieces still need fitted together, except for maybe two or three songs. following that, vocal selections and bass guitar. I don't even know when I'm going to have my bass with me next. regardless, things are coming along awesomely. still no overall title or cover art, but I'm working on that.

audacity

"Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. You can use Audacity to record live audio; convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs; edit Ogg Vorbis, MP3, WAV or AIFF sound files; cut, copy, splice or mix sounds together."

I'm sure that a lot of amateur computer musicians/engineers already use Audacity, and it really is the best raw audio recorder/editor I've seen. the design is simple enough that it can be used for kust about anything, but it has a load of flexibility too. also, it's free.

melody assistant

"Melody Assistant is dedicated to music writing, printing and rendering. Easy to use, Melody Assistant offers a user-friendly interface and powerful capabilities. Now used by a very active community of thousands of people, it has become a favored tool for creating music."

this isn't free, but it's damn cheap. I use it for composition of all of my songs, in addition to working my finalized drum programming. it's just about the most complete sequencing/composing software package ever—scores, tabs, custom instruments, etc.

if you haven't noticed, I did put in an audio streamer not too long ago. stashbox, while normally reliable, didn't handle it too well and I've now relocated it to Google, where it seems to be working just fine. I'll probably expand the playlist soon.

new music: currently I've got just over half an hour or so of songs written for the new album, and a few snippets of guitar and vocals recorded.

also I did mention earlier about having another EP—I don't know when, if ever, I'm going to release it.

here I am, hours after I meant to go to bed, finding myself compiling some strange sound collage that I didn't even plan on making, ever. perhaps it's the new software, or maybe the late hour, or even the Jazzkammer; regardless, I made noise. I wonder what will become of it.

aside from accidentally bashing my guitar on things, going to work, and listening to music more than I should be, I'm working on writing new music, as I've said. I've only got about a month left before I head back to Columbus, where I will be without an amplifier and likely a microphone, so I'm recording jams and feedback and noise while making feeble attempts at writing and recording vocals while I have time. when I get back to school, I probably won't have as much time to crank stuff out.

I've had a few interesting concepts for what the new studio album is going to be like, which I'm not going to divulge at the moment in case it ruins anything. I am planning on releasing it early next year (hopefully; I guess it depends on a lot of things). I'm also throwing around ideas about a couple new EPs as well, with some sort of re-composition theme. (of others' work.) and though that sounds really lame, it's not. trust me.

eh. I seem to like EPs a lot. they're a lot easier to deal with than albums. simpler.

okay, so I figured I'd reveal a little info (what's been confirmed so far) about the new releases.

Spire still isn't finished. I hope to get one more remix from a friend but haven't heard back from him with it at this point. consequently, I've not really been working on the other mixes so much. but I still really hope to put this out soon.

and so, the mysterious new ep... I am wrapping up recording bass (and vocals!) for it and doing a load of mixing. the ep is called Lifting of the Veil and will have 3 tracks, running around 17-18 minutes or so. so far it's turning out to be a lot more experimental than my previous stuff; I think it's really great though... but we'll see, I guess. it'll probably be out in July.

okay so, I realize it's been a while since I posted anything... reception of Antimonument has been great so far, which I'm very proud of. the Spire ep is still in the works. I have no idea when it's coming out since I don't have all the guest remixes yet and haven't even finished my own, but I hope to have it out this month.

in the meantime, I've been really busy wrapping up the end of the school year and am getting my stuff packed to move back home for the summer. my bass and guitar went home a while ago, but I have some new material to play around with and will hopefully have something new within the next few months. I'm looking at another ep perhaps. anyway, I'll try to keep this updated as things happen.

so mixing is about 95% done. it's sounding amazing at the moment; it's astonishing what one can learn doing this on one's own. I need to make a few more tweaks to the sound but it's looking like the record may drop next week or the week after. that's what I'm hoping, anyway.

Spire is coming together as well (however slowly); it'll be out after the album. currently, it's shaping up to include three alternate mixes of "spire", one of "antimonument", and one of "sunset and destroyer". I don't want to say any more yet because the details are really sketchy at the moment.
