The next chapter is on its way. An Offering releases August 7, 2020. A preview with pre-order is already up on Bandcamp here. You can get notified of the Spotify release here. In addition to streams and downloads on Bandcamp, the album will be on all other streaming platorms (same as Ring This Broken Bell is).

After months of hard work, recording on the new album is complete! All that is left now is post-production (finalizing effects, mixing, mastering, stuff like that). We're aiming for it to be out around the end of the summer (late July / August / September or so), possibly with a preview track a bit earlier than that, but I'm not sure yet. Mm, look at all those beautiful audio tracks. The album is called An Offering and will be eight tracks (six songs and two interludes).

It's 2020. I hope everyone is doing well. Things are a little nuts out there. I have two cool things to talk about today. Althought the blog has been quiet, Deterior has been busy. First: Deterior is starting to get onto other streaming services (besides Bandcamp). We're piloting the new distribution stuff with last year's album Ring This Broken Bell . I've had a little extra time these last few months to buckle down and really get to work on some new music. Progress on the new album is going very well. Instruments are recorded and the mix is getting pretty solidified. In fact, the only major piece left to do is record vocals and finish the mix and master. Just a little note on what's new in Deterior land. The last album Ring This Broken Bell has been out for a while now to no one's interest, so the next new thing is in the pipeline. Deterior is planning on putting out its eighth full-length album probably sometime early next year. At this stage, all music and arrangements have been written, and we're in rehearsal mode. It's the usual around-six-songs, around-forty-minutes deal. Lyrics and vocals haven't been started but they're going to be in as usual this time around. Rather than the orchestral post-rock style of the last album, this one is leaning harder into the traditional sludge sound—think Primitive Circuitry but a bit crunchier. Hello friends. It's been a while. It's been the usual life-getting-in-the-way excuse I always make, but rest assured (if you were curious) that Deterior is not dead. Instead I've been finding other creative (non-musical) outlets and there's been more real-life stuff going on for me lately. Despite that, new Deterior music has actually been in the works for the last four-ish years, believe it or not. I've been working off-and-on with an album's worth of material that has actually been pretty close to being finished for a long time; it's just a matter of final polishing and a couple more recording sessions to wrap things up (vocals and horn—that will be exciting, if it works out). No more black metal this time; I've been playing around with some old styles (and new as well). It is going well, I think. The three experimental / noise cassette EPs have finally made their way to lossless downloads and streaming on Bandcamp! Originally released in 2008 and 2009, these three tapes were my first forays into noise and sound art before spinning off my solo stuff . (I kinda want to start getting back into that!) As usual, they're pay-what-you-want for the digital downloads. It's almost done. Just a little bit of final polishing and putting the final touches on the booklet. The album is called Human Dust and will be out on August 26. Here's one of the songs!

Been pretty busy. All recording is done—guitar, bass, vocals—and the album is fully arranged and everything. The only bits left to do are tweaking the drums, adding samples and effects, and final mixing (though the preliminary mixing I've been doing while putting together the recordings has been sounding really good). I was thinking about posting a teaser clip, but it's not quite ready for that yet. Maybe in a couple days. But on the other hand, the whole thing will be ready in about two weeks anyway. There's no album title or artwork yet, though most of the songs are titled. We're looking at eight tracks, in the vein of Torchbearer with a bit of Primitive Circuitry thown in.

Honestly, not much to report. I've been spending most of the time meticulously arranging guitar tracks—chopping the takes up into little pieces, fixing up a few sloppy bits, and gluing them together into four huge tracks. Since I finished that I've been busy with other stuff, but I have been rehearsing and making final arrangements for vocals, which I'll start recording tomorrow (then bass is next week, I think?) Hopefully I'll have enough stuff prepared to post a teaser of some kind by then, as well. My attempt to schedule everything out on a day-by-day basis turned out to not work so well; at least, things take a bit longer than I plan and real life tends to get in the way. Regardless, everything should definitely still be done early next month.

Just finished three days' worth of laying down some guitar tracks. I've giving myself an extra day to record any supplementary stuff, but for the most part all the guitar work is done—three hours' worth of raw recordings as of now. I'm moving on to recording bass guitar late next week, but not before a million hours of chopping up those guitar takes and arranging the best ones into something that sounds relatively cohesive. I actually have a schedule drawn up for all the work that needs done, and it's pointing to sometime in mid-August for an actual release. But there's quite a bit to be done before that will happen. I repurposed part of my basement into a studio for the time being. I just got this desk and there's already too much crap for it to comfortably hold...

It seems like no amount of extra writing and honing arrangements is going to make me totally happy with anything anymore, so regardless of what happens I'm going to record this damn thing in July. Once I have some actual tracks down it'll be easier to actually piece things together. Also hi, yeah, second post for 2014, all right, getting the hype train moving at sonic speeds.

Well, you know by now that I don't really ever post here unless I have something worthwhile to say. As usual, in the last six months the blog has been quiet I've been doing other things, like my other blog, real job stuff, real life stuff, boring stuff. I never really took much of a break; I started back up with writing stuff for Deterior in about August or September and have been trucking along since. Got four or five new songs down so far, will probably get another one or two in. Still very very early in the process and I'm taking things very slowly, like last time.

Recently I did an interview with the fantastic sludge metal blog SLUDGELORD, the first interview I've done in four years. In it, I talk about all sorts of stuff, like my writing process, personal life, etc. It actually went up last week but I haven't had a chance to post a link here since I've been out of town.
