Whew

Twelve demos, seventy-four minutes all told (well really 13 demos, but the intro doesn't really count). It's a bit sad that I am going to scrap at least 3 of them for the album, but at the same time I enjoy being able to pick and choose. It's sounding much different from Cleanse (perhaps that's a good thing); it's faster and has kind of a more "post-hardcore" sound to it. Or something like that. Maybe I've been listening to too much punk lately... nah.

Demo!

I told you I was going to post a demo. Here you go!

hello (3)

up to eight demos for the new album, forty-five minutes, all killer no filler. especially after I realized that Cleanse only had five songs on it. that's going to change for the new album. I'll have time this month to crank out a few more, hopefully, since I'm out of town until early January; also, because of this, anyone wishing to get tapes or CDs is going to have to wait; sorry about that but I couldn't drag all my stuff with me! a demo WILL be posted soon.

music for battery release

tapes are going to be pressed this weekend. regardless of whether that happens or not, the EP will be out December 8. I'll be putting up a stream on last.fm before too long.

hello (2)

five demos have been cut so far. I'm aiming for at least a dozen good ones before I begin to think about album structure/layout. if I'm feeling generous, I may post one or two of them here soon.

hello

I suppose I should apologize for the severe lack of updates lately... one a month really isn't as much as I should be writing, I feel. the reason for that is probably because there's been a lot of stuff going on with me lately, mostly classwork, but rest assured that I am working on a ton of music-related stuff; it just won't come to fruition for a while, I suppose. here's a quick rundown: I have not worked on Ectype in a long time, but it is actually nearing completion; it just needs bass recorded and mixing/mastering. vocals and half of the guitar for the re-recorded edition of World are finished. I'm working on developing a more polished guitar tone via effects added during mixing instead of during recording, which should shape up to be interesting. I probably already mentioned that I have a new, more professional-sounding drum machine; it's pretty cool. I still haven't been able to press Music for Battery though I'll probably be able to over Than

songwriting

two songs have been written for the upcoming new album. of course I may not use them, or rewrite them, or whatever; but the point is I am actually making some progress. on that note, I'm moving back to my Columbus studio in a couple weeks to finish off Ectype . Music for Battery should be out soon after that, though I still haven't even gotten the tapes pressed (yeah, I've been lazy).

re-recording

yep, I'm finally cranking out stuff for the re-recorded version of the debut EP World . it can't be finished until at least after I am rejoined with my bass in late September, but I've got vocals done and I'll have guitar and drums finished by then as well. I've recently acquired a brand-spankin-new drum machine and it sounds godly. you'll be able to hear it on World and everything coming out after it; Ectype is stuck with the old drum machine I used for Cleanse , which is still good in its own way though.

music for tapes

the moment you've all been waiting for: the CD-R compilation of the three Music for... tapes is officially released. this is the first opportunity to hear the unreleased Music for Battery (out in September, likely). these are a limited, handmade run of an as-yet-undetermined amount. they cost $7 plus shipping. CD-Rs: a reality

thanks to fan input (yeah I do listen to you) I'm working on releasing a limited CD-R run of the following: Music for Tapes , a compilation of all three noise tapes—yes, including the as-yet-unreleased final installment Music for Battery Antimonument due to demand these will be available very soon. both are going to be very limited (depending on demand, really) so when I finally get around to fixing my PayPal store act fast. update one: inserts have been printed. they look badass except I didn't measure quite right and I have to trim them a lot. that's what I get for being hasty. update two: I now have some CDs and cases; I'll have them packaged up by the end of the week. update three: masters have been burned. it sounds great even with my crappy earbuds (I'll need to listen on good stereo later). update four: attempts to spray a test disc with engine enamel spray paint went okay. probably Saturday I'll whip up a batch of decorated discs, as tomorrow I'l

woo more delays

so apparently Audacity thought it would be cool to just delete some of my bass recordings for Ectype . what a jerk. and of course I decided not to bring my bass with me for whatever reason. I could record using another bass but nobody here owns a 5-string (what is the world coming to?). of course this might have something to do with having no space on my hard drive, but regardless, I need to re-record stuff. friggin computers.

CD-Rs: an idea

so I had this crazy thought today... I've heard several people express interest in getting physical copies of Deterior stuff. of course pressing CDs is way out of my budget (I almost literally have no money at the moment), so I was thinking about a simple on-demand CD-R system. so if you wanted a CD of an album or whatever, I'd whip one up and send it your way. probably something cheap like $5, same as the tapes. if this sounds cool, leave a comment! I'm lonely.

notice

I am currently away from the studio, and will be for at most the next 3 months or so. so if you want to order a tape, I will probably not be able to ship it out until late September at the latest. sorry about all that but it's more or less beyond my control. sort of. on the other hand, I will have lots more time to work on stuff, so Ectype (which has been sitting on my computer untouched for a long time as the school year was ending) will finally get proper engineering/mixing/mastering pretty soon. so look for that in perhaps mid-July? oh and don't forget to check out the GarageMonkey Productions blog ; there's been quite a few new things popping up over there.

ectype (and other) details

okay so apparently I have failed to say anything detailed about the covers EP Ectype that's in the works. right now it's looking like it's going to be four songs, covering Depeche Mode, Why?, Liars, and Venetian Snares. currently everything but the bass is recorded and I'm mixing stuff. unfortunately it's been taking a while because I've been really busy with school; fortunately that's winding down soon. hopefully it will be ready to go in June or July. of course we also have the final noise tape, Music for Battery , has been finished for a while and is awaiting pressing. that may happen this weekend, actually. as the name implies the sounds are drum-based, and it's much harsher and more textured than Music for Automata (at least, I think so). that may be out in July or August or something like that. a re-recording of the debut EP World is sort of underway as well. the third album is in planning stages (for release no earlier than 2010), and if I'

Music for Automata

Image
the second of the noise tapes trilogy, Music for Automata delves deeper into harsher experimentation contrasted with eerie ambience, field recordings, and ebbing drones. special thanks to Manfred Schröder for track titles and general inspiration. I apologize for avoiding the "Deterior-8" pun for the eighth Deterior release, I hope you'll forgive me. free downloads (192 kbps mp3) mediafire last.fm (direct links to each track are provided below) audio cassette: label: GarageMonkey Productions (GMP-009) format: cassette C30 / digital file released: March 31, 2009 time: 27:48 recorded and engineered by Deterior in New Studio in December 2008 mixed and mastered by Deterior in Studio 205 in January 2009 cover art: Deterior tracklist: side a Three Bodies Cause Chaos (3:46) Automata (3:03) Genetic Drift (7:38) side b Strange Attractor (3:25) Paradise Filter (3:51) Fresh and Tired Mountains (6:05) credits this record was entirely produced by deterior; however various sound

Music for Automata officially pressed today. extremely limited, like the first in the series. they'll be for sale this Tuesday, probably for the same price ($5). digital download included.

basses

one day, when I decide to buy a new bass, I will consciously not buy one with active pickups. these things are the worst idea ever. yes, this is prompted by my having a perfectly good battery turn out dead for absolutely no reason. or maybe I'm just bitter.

garagemonkey productions blog launched

so the other day the official GarageMonkey Productions blog was launched. eventually it will contain links to all sorts of music, including stuff that's not by me, and other news stuff and various fun things.

news

in the wake of Cleanse and its single, there may or may not be an official video for "Tidal" on its way in the near future. on march 31, the second edition in the noise tapes series, Music for Automata , will be released (and tapes WILL be made on time). looking farther ahead into the future, the third noise tape (which has been recorded already) and a covers EP are in the works for release sometime later this year. additionally, I'm a bit hesitant to announce that I have already begun writing songs for the third full-length album; however, it is going to be a very long time until it's ready (think maybe the end of this year or early 2010). that's all for now... thanks for listening.
